What's It Costing You?

Common blind spots we help clients uncover

Most people don't know what they're leaving on the table until someone shows them. Select the situations that sound like you.

Click any that apply to your situation:

I have RSUs or stock options vesting and I'm not sure when to sell

Common for: tech employees at public or pre-IPO companies
What people miss

Holding too long creates concentration risk. Selling at the wrong time can mean unnecessary capital gains taxes or missed AMT planning windows. Most people default to "I'll figure it out later" and end up overpaying.

How we approach it

We build a custom trading plan tied to your vesting schedule, tax brackets, and financial goals. We model the tax impact of different sell timelines so you can make decisions with real numbers, not guesswork.

I'm paying a CPA, a financial advisor, and doing some of it myself

Common for: high earners juggling multiple financial professionals
What people miss

When your CPA, advisor, and you aren't coordinating, things fall through the cracks. Your advisor recommends a Roth conversion, but your CPA doesn't know until April. Nobody is looking at the full picture together.

How we approach it

Your financial plan, investment portfolio, and tax returns are managed by one team that talks to each other daily. When we make a planning recommendation, the tax implications are already accounted for.

I live in New York or California and I'm not sure my taxes are optimized

Common for: tech professionals in high-tax states
What people miss

State tax rules around equity compensation, deferred comp, and sourcing are complex and vary dramatically. Generic tax prep software and even many CPAs don't catch state-specific optimization strategies.

How we approach it

We prepare taxes for hundreds of clients in NY and CA. We know the state-specific rules deeply and proactively plan around them. Year-end tax projections mean you're never surprised by your bill.

I make good money but I'm not sure I'm building wealth efficiently

Common for: high-income earners in their 30s and 40s
What people miss

High income doesn't automatically mean growing wealth. Without a strategy for which accounts to fund, when to convert, and how to invest tax-efficiently, a significant portion of your earnings gets lost to drag you could have avoided.

How we approach it

We build a coordinated plan: max out the right retirement accounts, implement backdoor Roth strategies, optimize asset location across taxable and tax-advantaged accounts, and make sure your cash isn't sitting idle.

I'm approaching a big life event and I don't have a financial game plan

Common for: people buying homes, having kids, or expecting a liquidity event
What people miss

Major transitions create a cluster of financial decisions that compound on each other. The timing of a home purchase affects your tax situation, which affects when you should exercise options, which affects your cash flow plan. Most people handle these in isolation.

How we approach it

We model the full picture: how does this purchase or event ripple across your taxes, investments, cash flow, and long-term plan? You make the decision once, with confidence, instead of second-guessing it for years.

I manage my own portfolio but I'm not sure it's tax-efficient

Common for: DIY investors using Schwab, Fidelity, or Vanguard
What people miss

Even solid investment picks can underperform when they're in the wrong account types. Tax-loss harvesting, asset location between taxable and retirement accounts, and rebalancing discipline are where most self-directed investors leak value over time.

How we approach it

We construct portfolios with tax efficiency as a core input, not an afterthought. We harvest losses systematically, place assets where they're most tax-advantaged, and rebalance without letting emotions drive the timeline.

The Brooklyn Fi Difference

Why tech professionals choose us

Complexity is our specialty. We live the same life you do, and we've built a team that understands the financial landscape of the modern tech worker.

Equity Compensation Experts

RSUs, ISOs, NQSOs, restricted stock. We build strategies around your vesting schedule, tax brackets, and concentration risk so you keep more of what you've earned.

Taxes, Planning, and Investments Together

Most firms silo these services. We integrate tax preparation, financial planning, and portfolio management into a single coordinated relationship. That's rare.

A Real Team Behind You

You get a dedicated financial planner supported by a team of investment specialists, CPAs, and service professionals. Not a solo advisor juggling everything.

Built for Modern Life

100% remote. Deep expertise in NY and CA tax law. Whether you're navigating a liquidity event, buying a home, or starting a family, we've guided hundreds of clients through it.

Fee-Only Fiduciary

We don't earn commissions. We don't sell products. Our only incentive is making sure your financial plan works for you. That's what fiduciary means in practice.

Female-Founded, Inclusive by Design

We work with all types of folks and all lifestyles. Married couples, individuals, same-sex partners. Everyone gets the same thoughtful, judgment-free planning.

What our clients say

Despite the dramatic ups and downs of my company's stock post-IPO, I'm calm and grateful knowing we've built a trading plan that will support our big-picture financial goals.

- Jackson and Holly, Brooklyn, New York

I found my way to BKFI during an extremely stressful and difficult time both financially and personally. (And of course, those two are linked.) I had both urgent financial issues to triage and was also at a crossroads for many life decisions. I also had a lot of "maturing" I needed to do in terms of how I handled my finances and I was extremely resistant to change. From my very first conversation with my planner and every conversation since, I've experienced an unbelievable level of support, expertise, and guidance. We immediately came up with a plan to address the most pressing issues while also looking ahead to the kind of life I wanted to build - something I had never stopped to ask myself. I didn't expect financial planning to be such a personal, emotional journey, and I could not be more thankful to be in the hands of BKFI. I now not only have a plan in place for long-term financial freedom but I also have ongoing guidance & support from people I trust, which is invaluable.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions about working with Brooklyn Fi

It depends on your situation, but here's what we see in practice: clients with equity compensation or complex tax situations often uncover meaningful savings within the first year through smarter exercise timing, tax-loss harvesting, or catching errors on previously filed returns. We end up amending roughly a third of the prior-year tax returns we review because of missed or incorrect equity compensation reporting. For others, the value compounds over time through things like retirement account optimization, better asset location, and disciplined planning around major purchases. Every client is different, but we expect everyone to have at least one "I didn't know that" moment in year one.
Our real edge is equity compensation tax strategy. The tax code around stock options is complicated enough that most accountants don't touch it. We go deep: AMT planning, cost basis adjustments, minimum tax credit carryforward, strategically generating income to increase your AMT budget. If you're paying a few hundred dollars for a tax return, you're not getting this level of analysis. And if you're in New York or California with stock options, it will likely cost you more NOT to work with us.
Most of our clients are sharp with money. That's actually what makes the relationship work so well. We're not here to explain what a 401(k) is. We're here to find the things you didn't know you were missing. We'll chat for fifteen minutes to see if we're a good fit, and we're honest if we think we can't add enough value to justify the cost. That said, we're pretty good at finding ways to add value, and we expect every client to have an "ah-ha" moment in the first year.
There's no hard-and-fast minimum. We generally provide the most value to households with at least $200,000 in annual income and/or $200,000 in liquid assets (or potential assets from a planned IPO, acquisition, or liquidity event). That said, we aren't in the habit of turning away people we can genuinely help. We've worked on everything from student loan strategies to cross-border investments to complex executive comp packages.
We don't offer hourly or project-based consulting. The reason is that the real value shows up when we can see your full picture: your equity compensation, tax situation, investments, and goals all at once. A one-off consultation would only scratch the surface. If you have a specific issue like an upcoming IPO or a complex stock option decision, we believe you'll get far more value from our comprehensive planning and tax services than a single conversation could provide.
